A: Yeah, they do suck. And you’re right to hate them, because they’re usually shit. They’re tired and played out at this point. The biggest problem is that there’s no real tension, because you know the superhero is going to win. Always. One of the most thrilling movies I saw in recent memory was a little film called “71” about a British soldier caught behind enemy lines during the Irish civil war in the 1970s. That movie is fucking intense and because our protagonist is a nobody, there’s no guarantee that he survives the events of the movie. That’s what made it so nerve racking. I don’t want to spoil anything, but you should go watch that movie. It’s great. Here’s the link to the trailer

See, here’s the thing about life: not everything always works out well in the end, and it’s nice to see movies show that from time to time. That’s why people still put on productions of ancient Greek tragedies: because they speak to the negative aspects of the human condition and give the audience catharsis. This is one of the reasons, in my opinion, that Game of Thrones is so beloved by audiences: because there’s no guarantee that your favorite character will survive and achieve their goals. You want to watch every episode because you don’t know what’s going to happen. That’s what makes it compelling. People will still be talking about GoT years from now in a way they won’t be talking about any of the Thor movies.

Superhero movies, on the other hand, aren’t interested in providing catharsis or real drama, they’re just content to shower people with pointless explosions and flat characters that never really grow. They know what audiences want. And as other commenters on this question have proven: they love it. They just want schlock garbage with their favorite characters punching each other for two and half hours straight. Fuck a good story or coherent plot, more explosions please! The comparison to porn was apt: it feels good while you’re jerking yourself off to it, but as soon as you nut, you realize you’ve been wasting your time watching smut (or you don’t and wait for the recovery period to be over so you can get back to jerking yourself off with no time for self reflection).
반면에 슈퍼히어로 영화들은 감명을 주거나 현실적인 일에 대해 다루기 보단 단지 무가치한 분노와 평면적인 그러니까 절대 ‘성장’하지 않는 선형적인 주인공을 선호할 것입니다. 히어로영화는 관객들이 원하는 것을 압니다. 그러니까 질문에 글을 남긴 다른 사람들이 단 댓글이 증명하는 것처럼: 그들은 좋은 스토리나 현실성 있는 전개는 다 좆이나 까잡수고 이런 자기 최애 캐릭터가 2시간 반 내내 주먹만 붕붕 내지르거나 좆나 폭발하는 것들만 나오는 똥쓰레기 만을 원하는 겁니다. 포르노와 별로 다를 게 없습니다. 당신이 그것들에 빠져드는 동안은 즐거울 수 있으나 정신을 차리고 현실로 돌아오는 순간 당신은 시간을 조졌다는 사실을 깨닫겠죠.(아님 중독에 걸려서 자아성찰 시간 조차 없다면 다시 거기로 빠져서 또 시간을 조지는 거고요)
As the author of the video mentioned, the only really good superhero movie is the first Iron Man. I loved that movie. It has the quintessential “super hero” moment when Iron Man descends from the heavens to save that little kid from having to watch his dad get gunned down by some terrorists. In real life, that kid would’ve watched his dad get gunned down, and then they would’ve shot him too. Right in his little fucking 7 year old head. Boom, headshot! But, at the last fucking second, Iron Man saves the day. It was beautiful. It was, dare I say it? Cathartic. It showed that maybe, just maybe, there was still some good left in the world.

Another important thing to consider is that this village massacre scene is a sort of event that’s actually happened before, is happening right now somewhere in the world in recent memory, and will most likely happen again in real life. The threat is real and immediate in a way that a army of CGI super kill-bots just isn’t. The villian of the story isn’t some magical blue skinned asshole who sits on a space throne, or a bunch of fucking space elves, they’re real people with banal motivations behind their wickedness. The big bad of the film is Tony Stark’s business partner who just wants to keep making weapons to sell to make money. He doesn’t care how they get used, he just wants that money in his pocket.
다른 고려할 법 한 중요한 점은 아이언맨1의 마을 학살 장면은 지금도 현실세계 어딘가에서는 일어나는 일이고 앞으로도 일어날 것이라는 점입니다. 위협은 CG로 도배된 살인에 미친 등신들의 군대가 아니라 현실적이고 현재진행형입니다. 그리고 이 이야기의 악당들 또한 우주 왕좌에 앉은 푸르딩딩한 피부를 가진 병신 혹은 좆 같은 우주 엘프들이 아니라 (현실적인)사악함을 가진 평범한 동기로 움직이는 사람들입니다. 영화에서 악을 담당하는 인물은 그저 돈을 위해 무기를 파는 토니 스타크의 동업자인데. 그는 무기가 어떻게 쓰이던 간에 지 주머니에 돈만 들어가면 그만인 사람입니다.
As far as I’m concerned, it’s one of the few superhero movies that deserves to be considered an actual film: the protagonist grows and changes in response to his realization of what his actions were doing to other people in the world. The point of the movie is to see how a selfish asshole learns to be a better man, and try to atone for the damage he’s done in the world as best he can. It’s not about getting into a punching match with some other guy in a dumb robot suit.

It’s also worth pointing out that Iron Man 1’s financial success is the reason why we got into the superhero movie craze to begin with. It was so successful that everyone else in Hollywood wanted in on the money. A professional screenwriter once told me that “No one in Hollywood wants to be the first guy with a good idea, they want to be the second guy ripping off the first guy’s work after he proved it could be successful” and boy howdy does that resonate with me when I watch these superhero movies.

And, to finish my own self-important little rant: superhero comics were never meant to by “high art”, they were meant to be filler that provided an excuse to show advertisements to children. They were produced in order to make money by selling ads. They were always commercial in nature. So it’s really no surprise that their evolution into big movies franchises are motivated by the same reasoning: to make money. And I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing either: these are business ventures after all, no one spends $100 Million to make $99 Million back, I get it, I don’t hate business. They need to be financially successful in order to keep all those people working. That’s fine and admirable in it’s own way. But don’t get it twisted, while I’m sympathetic to the cast and crew just trying to make a buck to pay the bills, on an artistic level, this stuff is really rather mediocre. They’re shallow and trite and predictable as fuck. But hey, if you, the customer, love to suck down all that drek, well, good for you. I hope you enjoy yourself, you’re the one paying to see it after all. But me? I think I’ll do something else with my time, thank you very much.
그리고 마치기 전 저의 작은 불평불만 : 슈퍼히어로 만화는 절대 “수준있는 작품”을 의미하지않습니다. 그것들은 그저 코 묻은 애들에게 광고를 팔아먹기 위해 채워진 “무언가”죠. 그것들은 태생적으로 상업적이고 그러한 이유로 거대 영화 프렌차이즈로 성장한 것도 딱히 놀랍지 않습니다.(모두 돈을 위해) 다만 결국 그것도 모두 사업의 일환이고 누구도 99억을 벌기 위해 100억을 쓰지 않습니다. 그러한 사업을 이해하고요. 그들도 결국 사람이고 먹고 살기 위해 재정을 버는 계획을 하니까요. 그것은 괜찮고 존경받을 일입니다. 하지만 둘(공과 사)은 분리되어야 하고 먹고 살기 위해 일하는 출연진과 직원들을 위한 동정일 뿐입니다. 예술적인 관점에서 이건 진짜로 평범 그 자체입니다. 그저 진부하고 얕고 예측 가능한 좆 같은 거니까요. 하지만 당신이 고객이니까 쓰레기에 파묻히기 원한다면, 그러니까 “당신”이 좋다면. 당신이 즐기길 바랄 뿐이죠, 무엇보다 당신이 “돈”을 내고 보는 거니까요. 하지만 저요? 그 시간에 다른 일을 하겠습니다. 감사합니다.
